This one is comfort food on a platter! I really like the beef version, but I’m also partial to the ground turkey version because it’s a little lighter. You can make it with chicken broth or turkey broth, whatever you have on hand. Both are great served over mashed potatoes.
(makes 4 servings)
1 pound ground beef
1⁄3 cup dry bread crumbs
1⁄2 teaspoon salt
1⁄4 teaspoon pepper
1⁄2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 egg
1 large onion sliced
1 1⁄2 cups beef broth
8 ounces fresh mushrooms
1⁄2 cup cold water
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1. Mix thoroughly ground beef, bread crumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder and egg.
2. Shape into 4 patties about 3⁄4 inch thick.
3. Cook in skillet over medium heat turning occasionally until brown, about 10 minutes.
4. Drain fat.
5. Add onion, broth and mushrooms. Heat to boiling. Reduce to simmer.
6. Cover and simmer until beef is done (approximately 10 minutes).
7. Remove patties from skillet. Heat onion mixture to boiling.
8. Mix water and flour. Stir into onion mixture. Boil and stir one minute until thickened.
9. Serve over patties.
**You can substitute ground turkey for the ground beef and chicken broth for the beef broth for a lighter taste.
