I taught this recipe as a community outreach cooking class at our local public library. We recorded it and you can see the whole class here.
1 tablespoon butter OR olive oil
1 clove garlic
1 large onion
1 pound ground beef, ground turkey or ground sausage (optional) 1 6 ounce can tomato paste
1 15 ½ ounce cans tomato sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1 cups water
1 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon basil
½ teaspoon salt
1 medium green pepper (optional)
8-16 ounces mushrooms either canned or fresh (optional)
- Brown ground meat (if using) in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Chop onions and garlic and add to the saucepan. You will need the butteror oil if no meat is being used. Cook until the onions are soft and the garlic is fragrant.
- Add tomato paste, tomato sauce, sugar and water. Stir until combined.
- Stir in oregano, basil and salt.
- Add green pepper and mushrooms at this point if desired.
- Cook over medium-low heat until thickened stirring occasionally.
**The uses for this sauce are many:
It can be served over spaghetti, or any pasta for that matter.
It can be served over meatballs, either with pasta or as a sandwich with cheese on sub buns. It makes a great pizza sauce.
